Teacher-Founded Startup Kai XR Reaches $3 Million Raised to Expand STEM Learning Across the U.S.

Teacher-founded edtech company brings total funding to $3 million as it builds on momentum in Alabama and expands its work in California.

OAKLAND, Calif. — October 23, 2026 — Kai XR, an experiential STEM platform for elementary and middle school students, has closed a $1.6 million seed round, bringing the company’s total capital raised to $3 million.

The round includes investment from Kapor Capital, ICA Fund, Bronze Valley, Camelback Ventures, and the State of Alabama through Innovate Alabama and the State Small Business Credit Initiative. The milestone also puts Frazier among a small group of Black women founders in the U.S. to cross the $1 million venture mark.

Kai XR has expanded its reach to schools across more than 110 U.S. school districts, with a growing presence in states including Alabama, Georgia, and California. The new funding will fuel Kai XR’s next stage of growth, bringing immersive STEM learning to more school districts and communities across the country.“

Students can’t be what they can’t see,” said Kai Frazier, founder and CEO of Kai XR. “I built Kai XR to help students understand new technology, think critically, and see themselves in the industries shaping their future.”

‍
As a teacher, Frazier saw how difficult it was for her students to connect what they were learning in school to the people, places, and careers beyond the classroom. She created Kai XR to help students see where STEM can take them and start building the skills those careers require.

That need is becoming more urgent. Nine out of 10 U.S. jobs require digital skills, and technologies like artificial intelligence are quickly changing how people work. Kai XR helps students start building AI literacy, critical thinking, problem-solving, and other skills long before they enter the workforce.

Kai XR in Action

Through Kai XR’s immersive STEM Adventures, students practice STEM in the real world. A student might take a virtual field trip inside a research lab, see how an engineer approaches a challenge, and then design and prototype a solution inside a 3D Makerspace. Another Adventure might introduce students to telehealth, aerospace engineering, or CRISPR gene editing before asking them to apply what they learned through a discovery game or design challenge.

Kai XR’s immersive technology places students inside interactive experiences. Along the way, they ask questions, evaluate information, solve problems, make decisions, and build confidence using technology.

The impact is showing up in research. Stanford University researchers found a significant increase in students’ interest in STEM careers after using Kai XR. Independent research found that 91% of students strengthened their understanding of how science connects to the world around them, reinforcing Kai XR’s focus on making STEM feel relevant beyond the classroom..

Shaped in Alabama Classrooms

Kai XR began in Oakland and was later invited to Alabama to work alongside local districts and community partners. Frazier spent time in classrooms across the state, working with students and teachers to test STEM Adventures, gather feedback, and shape the platform to fit naturally into the way schools and classrooms operate. Each Kai XR lesson builds problem-solving, tech fluency, and career awareness—preparing students not just for school, but for life.

In Birmingham, students have used Kai XR to design engineering solutions for their own communities. In rural Perry County, Kai XR turns the classroom into a gateway to the wider world, allowing students to explore places they may never physically visit, meet people working in STEM, and see how science and technology are shaping their communities and futures.Through experiences like the Storymakers Project, students don’t just study history—they document, produce, and share it, while building the skills to shape their own futures.

What began with a handful of classroom partnerships has grown into Kai XR reaching students and educators across almost 30 Alabama school districts.

For communities, that early exposure goes beyond career exploration. It helps students understand the industries growing around them and begin seeing themselves as part of the local workforce long before high school graduation.

“Kai XR has been part of our district for four years, making STEM learning feel real and engaging,” said Krystal Wright, Director of Technology at i3 Academy. “It connects our students to the world beyond the classroom and gives them a head start in imagining and preparing for their future.”

Kai XR also makes immersive STEM easier for schools to implement. The platform works on devices schools already have, helps reduce teacher planning time, and gives students multiple ways to engage and show what they know, including students in special education settings.

“Kai XR doesn’t just meet the STEM standards, it exceeds them,” said Nate Dunn, Alabama Charter School Teacher of the Year. “It gives students the real-world context they need to truly understand what they’re learning.”

STEM is the fastest-growing career sector in the country, creating new opportunities across technology, healthcare, biotechnology, aerospace, clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and more.

Kai XR’s next phase of growth will focus on building more partnerships with employers, workforce leaders, and community organizations. Through those partnerships, Kai XR can bring more real-world STEM experiences into students nationwide.

What began with a handful of classroom partnerships has grown into Kai XR reaching students and educators across almost 30 Alabama school districts.

By expanding its partnerships in the San Francisco Bay Area, where Kai XR was founded, the company is building on its momentum connecting students to some of the world’s most influential companies, technologies, and ideas. Through the Kai XR platform, students nationwide can gain exposure to opportunities they may never have known existed.
‍
For school districts and STEM organizations, that means giving students more time to build relevant skills, explore pathways, and understand where their learning can lead before they begin making decisions about courses, careers, or their future.

A Significant Fundraising Milestone

The raise marks a significant milestone for Frazier as a Black woman founder in a venture market where access to capital remains deeply uneven.

Kai XR’s $3 million in total funding places Frazier among a small group of Black women founders in the United States to cross the $1 million venture mark.

“Kai Frazier has remained steadfastly focused on students too often ignored, using technology to help them explore new worlds and expand what they believe is possible,” said Freada Kapor Klein, co-founder of Kapor Capital and a longtime advocate for expanding opportunity in technology. “Kai XR’s growth reflects the real need for learning that closes gaps of access and opportunity for all students, no matter their background or zip code, and continues to be a model for what can happen in classrooms nationwide.

The milestone gives Kai XR the capital to turn proven classroom traction into broader national reach, bringing its STEM Adventures to more students while helping schools and communities prepare earlier for the industries reshaping the economy.
‍
For Frazier, the goal is bigger than company growth. It is to help communities build stronger workforce pipelines by giving students earlier exposure to STEM, AI literacy, and the skills their local industries need.

Additional Investor Quotes:
“Kai’s ability to raise $3 million in venture capital is a significant achievement, particularly at a time when Black founders received just 0.32% of U.S. venture funding in 2025. ICA Fund was thrilled to join Kai XR’s round and support the company’s expansion into California. We’re proud to back a teacher-led ed tech company bringing greater educational opportunity to more students,” said Allison Kelly, CEO of ICA Fund.

“Kai is exactly the kind of founder Camelback exists to back: a teacher building from proximity, who saw what her students were missing and built the solution herself,” said Elaine Atherton, Chief Programs Officer at Camelback Ventures. “Every student who uses KaiXR to discover a STEM career they didn’t know existed now has the opportunity to step toward lasting economic mobility for their family and their community.”
